The college scholars I coach are exposed to a lot of expectations: professors, parents, peers, and scholarship committees, to name a few. As their life coach, I walk beside these scholars and want for them what they want for themselves. The key here is knowing what they really want! During our coaching meetings, we discover what their lives look like today by taking an inventory. Then later, we create the Vision Boards that put into pictures what it is they want their lives to look like in the future. Documenting their top five strengths, getting to know what they are most passionate about, looking at their true values, and creating a mind-map of their social networks creates a basis for the coaching. All of these discoveries help the students to know themselves better and to realize what path they are taking. Together these assessments bring clarity of purpose and conscious design to their lives.
Dreams do come true.
Expectations from others surround the individuals and groups I coach: spouses, children, extended family, and community groups, for instance. Some of the issues we encounter include: time management, balancing work with family life, money, health and fitness. In each coaching session, I work with my clients to discover what it is they really really want. This provides us a powerful tool that we return to each time we meet. This model works for college students and for more mature adults.
How do expectations come into your life? Do they come from you or from others? It is better to go with high expectations for yourself and fail than to go low and meet them. Envisioning life as you expect it to be brings clarity to the path you want to follow and to the dreams you have in your heart.
John Wooden, said: “Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.” This positive attitude changes the way you look at the world and brings the best into your life. You will fulfill your own expectations.
