Fall is the time to renew membership to the gym, especially since football tailgating, back to school parties and restaurant outings with friends tend to add to one’s girth. Are you ready to go to the gym? I am. Pilates class last week was my first time back since knee surgery. I certainly have been lazy, exercising exclusively my right knee. Meanwhile, the rest of my body has gone to mush!!!!
Yet as Bishop Jakes reminds us, the “gym of life” is the place where we get a real workout, experience resistance, and find out how to avoid doing what is most beneficial for us. We know what to do; we just don’t want to do it. I, for example, step over piles of papers on the floor in my study for days at a time, resisting filing them. Entering my closet, I see that it needs to be neater, yet I avoid taking the steps necessary to put it in order. This is a habit I want to break. I am finding out things about myself, honoring them and moving toward a change. My coach is holding me accountable.
One of life’s workouts is dealing with your resistance to follow through and accomplish tasks you have left undone. Bring them to the forefront, and make a conscious effort to take the steps necessary to get to where you really want to be.
Coaching Questions:
- Are you noticing things you resist? Write a list.
- Do you know what to do, yet do not want to do it?
- What workouts are you experiencing in the “gymnasium of life”?
Life Coaching holds a client accountable for taking the action steps they say they want to take in order to get to where they really want to be.
