Years ago, I visited Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. I stepped onto the first lookout point and literally it took my breath away. I remember to this day the extreme beauty, which Mrs. Butchart created from a depleted limestone quarry.
Mr. and Mrs Butchart moved to the area to open a cement plant and the limestone deposits were crucial to the plant. After they were depleted, Mrs Butchart had a dream to create a beautiful garden in the arid, bare and ugly ground. She brought in tons of soil and began planting flowers, making a spectacular sunken garden. From 1906-1929, Mr. and Mrs Butchart both worked in the garden. Their grandson, Ian Ross, was given the garden on his 21st birthday, and for 50 years he continued the creation of an international destination, adding concerts, stage shows, and a spectacular fountain. Great-grandson, Chris Ross choreographed musical firework shows.
This is definitely a place to visit with uninterrupted bloom from March to October. You can share in Mrs. Buchart’s dream. Their website is www.butchartgardens.com.
