When I think of a splendid torch that burns brightly for life, I immediately think of the Olympic torch. It is held high in honor of the many athletes who train diligently, suffer injury and dedicate themselves to excellence.
The Winter Olympics will be held from Feb 7 to Feb 23, 2014, in Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, Russia.
Angeli Vanlaanen from Bellingham, Washington, is a member of the Olympic Team USA for the "halfpipe." She has been participating in halfpipe events since 2005 and won the World Cup Superpipe in 2009.
November that year she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. She suffered with fainting, vertigo, weakness and severe pain; symptoms she had had for a long time yet they were getting worse. Finally doctors discovered she had been bitten by a tick while on vacation as a child. This bacterial infection can be cured within weeks if found early yet it is very hard to cure if a lot of time has gone by. Angeli quit skiing for 3 years to undergo intense treatment to get healthy and to change her diet forever. Please watch her 2013 documentary Lyme Light. Angeli’s way of raising awareness of Lyme disease and a fund raising avenue for those who need treatment.
She is now optimistic, positive and living her life’s dream to be on the US Olympic team. She is certainly carrying her torch and it is burning brightly for her life and for others with Lyme disease, so they know they are not alone.
