April 5, 2013Change for the BetterIn Early February, I wrenched my right knee. I had difficulty walking and each step was painful. A doctor visit resulted in a diagnosis of osteoarthritis and he gave me several options: wear a brace, go to Physical Therapy on a regular basis, take a shot in the knee, or have a knee replacement!!!! I chose the shot and then Physical Therapy. Working with a physical therapist two or three times a week, I discovered many things about my gait that needed changing. I have taken this process one step at a time and my knee is slowly straightening out. Seems I have been giving in to this arthritis pain and letting my knee stay bent. I celebrate and appreciate my small accomplishments, and have learned how to reduce the pain when it appears, thus empowering a healthy knee. Life brings each of us physical challenges and defining moments. That moment in February changed my daily routine drastically, yet I celebrate the times I walk without pain. Anat Baniel believes in plasticity of the brain whereby one can make big changes in physical strength and vitality with simple movements. Her program is centered on “The Nine Essentials.” I am using many of them as I return to optimal health: walking with attention, going slow, awareness of my goal, and being enthusiastic about my progress.
