November 5, 2012If It Takes TWO Minutes, Then Do It!While coaching a university student, I discovered that he had a messy and cluttered car that was bothering him, yet he would not take time to clean it up. I asked him why he tolerated the mess when it takes just TWO minutes to begin the clean up process?! He agreed that in TWO minutes he could fill a garbage bag with the throwaway food items and containers in the car. Done! Before he knew it, his two-minute projects added up to a neat and clean car. Next was the room, his home away from home: TWO minutes allowed him to hang clothes and put away shoes. For some reason, knowing that he was going to have to work for only two minutes before moving on to more pleasant pursuits, made him willing to do each task. The results reflected in his studying with a clearer mind, greater enjoyment of his "free time," and in a smile every time he entered his clutter-free car or room. I, too, have been using the "TWO minute" rule. Piles on the steps waiting to go up, and bills or tax information needing to be filed, lead me to say: "that will only take TWO minutes." So I do it. What can you accomplish in two minutes? These things that take up valuable space in your mind are limiting your forward direction toward bigger and better accomplishments. Your environment reflects your beliefs about yourself, so clear the clutter, simplify your life and do those TWO-minute tasks. Coaching Questions:
