G-d gave you a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say 'thank you'? William Arthur Ward
Here in the United States, people are celebrating Thanksgiving - a time to give thanks. I've written about this topic from various angles in the past, so I'll keep this brief.
Saying thank you is often perfunctory, automatic, mechanical, unthinking, obligatory - that is, we don't even think about it. Rather, it is said out of habit or as a rote response when someone interacts with us such as: giving change or wrapping something for us, providing directions when we are lost, telling us to have a nice day, calling us, or answering our questions, etc.
I recall being in a seminar where we were challenged to sing happy birthday to the people whose birthday coincided with the event. We sang 'happy birthday' as we usually do - and then waited for the talk to continue. The presenter explained that we didn't really wish anyone a happy birthday but rather went through the motions. It stuck with me because I realized we do that often with so many things. We had to repeat the song (at least twice more) but add real feeling and sincerity, and it clearly sounded and felt different each time.
So I will take this opportunity to thank YOU for reading this, for being a subscriber to Life's Little Lessons, for work that we have done together, for your friendship, for allowing me to coach, to mentor, to teach, to share with you, or if we haven't formally met, to be connected through these monthly lessons.
INVITATION TO EXPERIMENT
How and when can you add 'thank you' into your daily life and really mean it? Perhaps you need to thank yourself for something - perhaps another person. In any event, see if you can catch yourself saying it (and not truly meaning it) and then stopping and repeating it with sincerity. See what happens (if anything) within you when it is spoken from that deeper place vs. just two words that are a force of habit.
Very best regards,
