Nature's Wisdom for Women

Hello Ladies, I hope you're having a good season and taking optimal care of yourselves! While we're still in Winter for another month, there's still time for some good personal renewal and hibernation, even as the anticipation of Spring is stirring!

I recently heard astrologer Heidi Rose Robbins say that she realizes how much the Feminine Principle requires massive times of doing nothing . It's that state of Being rather than Doing, and this is how we nourish the Feminine, in order to re-emerge with something to o ... read more

Nature's Wisdom for Women
We have emerged through the Solstice of 2012 into a profound new cycle of possibilities and collaborative solutions.
For three days on December 20, 21 and 22 there was a live-streaming event in honor of this "shift in consciousness." Watching Barbara Marx Hubbard, one of the hosts of this event, was profoundly moving for me.
Barbara has been speaking about "Conscious Evolution" for over 40 years, and believes that when a species reaches a crisis point, a brilliant evolutionary ... read more

  Nature's Wisdom for Women
This time of year has a deep internal pull. Trees and plants pull their energy in and downward - and we do, as well! The approach of winter facilitates access to our own "roots;" our less visible but very powerful inner dimensions. It can be hard to recognize, when the holiday season compels us into so much outer activity!
The moon cycle can help us find optimal times to turn inward, as well. I've learned to pay attention to the Dark Moon throughout the year, for this reason. (Dark ... read more

Nature's Wisdom for Women

Harvest time is here.

In my garden, the zucchini plants are long and withered, yet at the tips more tiny zucchinis are just beginning to grow. I'll keep tending the plants a little longer to see if they can make it for one more round of fruit. At the same time, the weather is right for getting root crops into the ground now that it will be a little cooler.

As we look around at the shortening days and different foods that are ripening, we can sense the turning of the year toward the stillness of winter. Autumn is the time of harvest, gather ... read more

Last weekend I did some Qigong in the park with Jessica Kolbe, who has developed a whole series of "Animal Antics" movements. She took us through a series of playful and regenerative motions that resembled different animals. It was fun!

Qigong is an ancient healing practice, similar to Tai Chi. Each motion is done slowly and smoothly, bringing you into a more meditative space. You're able to expand into the moment, and into the surrounding environment. I particularly like Qigong because each motion is repeated several times, making it easy to follow and learn. read more

Nature's Wisdom for Women

Every year as we come to the longest day, I try to sense the turning of the seasons, knowing that even as summer begins, the days will begin to grow shorter - about one minute a day or half an hour a month - for the next six months.

I've always envisioned the year as a circle, with summer, and the longest day, at the top. Seeing time as a circle, instead of a continual line into the future, gives us a sense of place, and also helps us to see the spiral of themes as we circle back to different moods and aspects of our lives, over and over.

And we ... read more

Women's Way Newsletter May 2012 Talking to Girls about Menstruation

Simple traditions can help us usher in the change of seasons.

I remember making "May Baskets" with my mother - little baskets of folded colored paper, filled with sprigs of wildflowers and hung on neighbors' doorknobs - a refreshing way to honor the season of bright new things.

Thinking in terms of seasonal changes is also a good way to relate to our monthly cycles, and an excellent way to introduce girls to the concept. Mothers and daughters can celebrate the seasons together, and can also learn to anticipate and appre ... read more

Nature's Wisdom for Women

Do you have a springtime ritual? Ritual is valuable as a marker, to help you appreciate your own experience by taking creative pauses as life goes by.

Some women mark the beginning of spring by taking a special walk, visiting a favorite tree, or bringing out springtime items to place on a altar or significant spot in their home.

When I moved to Ojai many years ago, my friend and I were unloading some of my belongings from the truck, after dark. I looked around to locate the orange tree because there was an overwhelming fragrance of orange b ... read more
