One: Kudos to Nancy Brock, Vivian Eisenecher, Dan Anderson
Kudos to Nancy Brock, Columbia, South Carolina, for being a finalist in
the Novella category and semifinalist in the Novel category in the 2008
Faulkner-Wisdom Literary Competition (www.wordsandmusic.org).
My book, Recovering Me, Discovering Joy/Uplifting Wisdom for Everyday
Greatness is now available at Amazon.com and through my Web site,
www.recoveringme.com. This courageous work details an honest,
straight-from-the-heart account of my difficult struggles (depression,
anxiety and alcoholism) and how I was transformed to a successful,
grateful, and joyful woman. All 200 inspiration-packed pages are laced
with humor and an uplifting spirit of gratitude, revealing keys to a
richer, easier, and happier life. --Vivian Eisenecher
Dan Anderson, an Orlando, Florida, member, swept the Mystery Awards at
the Florida Writers Association annual conference at Lake Mary,
Florida. His recently published novel, Bad Vibrations, won First Prize
in the Published Mystery category. It was the third literary award for
Bad Vibrations, which won the Rockway Press Best Novel Prize in its
International Literary Competition and a Florida Writers Association
Lighthouse Book Award in the Mystery-Suspense category. Dan's recently
completed novel, Death Cruise, was also awarded First Place for Best
Unpublished Mystery. Death Cruise will be published in 2009.
Congratulations!
Your successes encourage others, so please send in your accomplishments
for our kudos section.

Two: From the editor’s desk — Writers Helping Writers
Dear Fellow Writers:
I returned from Orlando, Florida, a few days ago, and I’m still
glowing. The balmy weather and Florida sun warmed me for sure, but more
than that, the people at the Florida Writers Association conference
added radiance to my demeanor. The Florida Writers Association tagline,
“Writers Helping Writers,” sums up the organization’s attitude and
aligns with my philosophy.
Here are a few other things I appreciated about the conference:
As with almost any conference, several workshops took place
simultaneously, which afforded attendees a wide choice of subjects to
study; however, it also meant writers couldn’t be everywhere at once,
and they sometimes missed information they would have liked to have
received. FWA resolved the situation by offering a table where extra
handouts from the workshops were available to all, so even if you
missed a seminar, you could still get the handouts.
The food was actually good. I know serving 300 people at once is a
challenge, but the chef and the conference folks picked items that
could be prepared in large quantities and still be tasty and
nutritious.
The meeting rooms were roomy and comfortable, and restrooms were never
more than a few doors away.
The hotel facilities were exceptional and spotless.
Friendliness prevailed.
The speakers may have all had a secondary agenda of promoting their
businesses or books, but they spent almost all their time giving
information to participants rather than promoting themselves.
For every workshop evaluation attendees turned in, they received a
ticket to a drawing. In this way most people remembered to evaluate the
workshops, presenters and committee members received a great deal of
important feedback, and more than seventy items were given away.
Best of all, the presenters offered a wide selection of subjects for
writers of many types.
Conferences are great places to meet publishers and agents, many of
whom requested manuscripts from people who pitched their projects. No
doubt some sales will result. If you want to further your career, you
can do nothing better than attend a conference where publishers,
agents, and others will be speaking. You’ll learn more, meet people who
can help you and educate you, and you’ll have fun doing it. You may
even be able to deduct your expenses. Talk to your accountant about it.
I hope I’ll see you at the next conference . . . somewhere.
Yours in writing,
Bobbie Christmas (Bobbie@zebraeditor.com or bzebra@aol.com )

Three: Ask the Book Doctor — About Commas, E-books, and Pseudonyms
Q: How would you punctuate the following sentence? Would you delete the
comma after the first "that?" Would you delete both commas?
Mr. Smith concluded with the vague assertion that, if he ever gets a
handle on the IRS situation, he will attempt to pay the client and
asked that we call him in ninety days.
A: I would delete the first comma and let the first part of the
sentence act as a single introductory phrase. I would also separate his
conclusion from his request, so I would write it this way: Mr. Smith
concluded with the vague assertion that if he ever gets a handle on the
IRS situation, he will attempt to pay the client. He asked that we call
him in ninety days.
You could argue that both commas could be left, thereby setting aside
the nonessential phrase, “if he ever gets a handle on the IRS
situation.” I stand by the fact that what he concluded and what he
asked should appear in separate sentences.
Q: I am working on formatting and editing a nonfiction book designed to
be both an e-book and a published hard-copy book. I will also likely
end up doing the work to get this work accepted by a publisher. Can you
tell me, have e-books become popular yet, or is the core of publishing
still in paper and not looking to move forward?
A: Most publishers I know that produce e-books and printed books are
not traditional publishers; that is, they produce print-on-demand books
and do not stockpile books or distribute them to stores; they simply
print one at a time when they are ordered, so there’s no major
investment on their part and no advance on royalties to you. Basically
if you sell a book, you get a percentage of the profit, but if you
yourself don’t sell it, the printer won’t go to any trouble to sell it
for you.
As far as the popularity of e-books, several companies have tried to
produce machines (Kindle and others) to make e-books more attractive to
readers, but still e-books lag far behind printed books when it comes
to sales. Still, after an e-book is created, you incur no further cost
to reproduce and distribute it when sold, so e-books can provide
one-hundred percent profit to authors who have a client base and can
promote their own books or sell them through their own Web sites.
Seriously stop and think before self-publishing a book in any format
(even as an e-book) if you hope to sell it to a traditional publisher.
Many traditional publishers do not accept books that have already been
on the market in any form, unless you can prove you sold 5,000 copies
or more. If you hope to sell to a traditional publisher, it’s safer to
save self-publishing for later, after having exhausted all attempts at
finding a traditional publisher.
Q: I am simply a hobby writer. I do get the occasional how-to article
published in a magazine; however, I want to write some western fiction
novels. One problem, as I see it, is my surname. It is of eastern
European origin and sounds strange to most Americans. If I write under
an alias, are there any special rules that might apply to using a nom
de plume, getting paid under the assumed name, copyrights under that
name, et cetera?
A: Without being an attorney, I cannot give you the full and legal
answer you deserve, but as I understand it, pseudonyms are not a
problem in the publishing business. Your publisher will know your real
name and send your checks to your legal name. Once you produce a
written piece of work, the copyright automatically belongs to you until
and unless you sell those rights, and the rights will belong to you no
matter what name you may choose to use when and if you register the
copyright.

Four: This Month’s Writing Tip from Bobbie Christmas – Briticisms
Last month I mentioned one word I see written two ways, depending upon
whether it’s in British English or American English. This month I’ll
give you a list of British words or spellings to avoid when writing for
American audiences. I’ll also give you the acceptable American
versions. Ready?
British - American
Amongst - Among
Amidst - Amid
Unbeknownst - Unbeknown
Cancelled - Canceled
Grey - Gray
Be sure to use the Find and Refine Method to find and repair any
British usage when you write for American audiences.
Time to Find and Refine
Find the words featured today and many other opportunities for
improvement in your own work by using my trademarked Find and Refine
Method, more carefully outlined in my textbook on creative writing:
_Write In Style_ (Union Square Publishing), which lists many more ways
you can easily refine your own manuscripts.
With your file open on your computer, pull down Edit, and then Find.
Type in the word or punctuation you want to find, and your computer
will stop on each one and allow you to ponder whether you can change,
correct, improve, or delete that usage. For more opportunities for
improvement, buy _Write In Style_ (Union Square Publishing) in your
local bookstore or order it from Amazon.com by clicking here:

I was in your www.AuthorSmart.com tele-class yesterday [and heard you
say to eliminate every use of “very” in manuscripts].
Here is an excellent quote about using/overusing “very.”
Substitute "damn" every time you're inclined to write "very;"
your editor will delete it and the writing will be just as it should
be.

As if the economic news weren’t bad enough…
Standard & Poor’s noted the reduction in print advertising and predicts
it will continue to drop through the end of 2008. What does this news
mean to freelance writers? Magazine publishers count on print
advertising revenue not only to support them financially but also to
support the amount of editorial content in the magazine. Fewer ads per
issue means fewer articles per issue, which means less freelance work
for writers. Tighten your belts, writers, but don’t worry. I’ve been in
the business for more than three decades and have seen print
advertising rise and fall several times. It will rise again. Hang in
there.

Relix Magazine welcomes freelancers
For a magazine with its roots in Grateful Dead coverage, the passing of
Jerry Garcia on August 9, 1995, could have tolled its death knell.
Instead, Relix served as a rallying point for the community, and, in
the years since, has slowly moved its emphasis away from the Grateful
Dead to coverage of jam bands that have filled the void, as well as
other, non-mainstream types of music.
Today, Relix delivers coverage of music across genre divides; a single
issue might contain articles on artists as diverse as Ben Harper, Bob
Marley, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and the Grateful Dead. In short, Relix
is “deadicated” not to only entertaining its readership, but also
providing a true community for lovers of Music for the Mind.
We want to expand our coverage of new artists who might be of interest
to our readers, so we are always looking for ideas. We also deal with
environmental, cultural and lifestyle issues of concern to our
audience.
We are happy to welcome new contributors, so if you have story ideas,
please feel free to drop us a note, preferably by email, to the
appropriate editor.

Eight: Writing Assignment – Alternate Circumstances
All of us have made choices and had change thrust upon us throughout
our lifetime. Many of us are left with questions after we see where our
life paths have taken us. Think back on the major shifts in your life,
such as when and who you married, the dynamic or dysfunction of your
childhood home, the courses you studied in school. Have you ever
wondered what would have happened if you had married someone else or
not gotten married at all? What if you had lived in a different
childhood environment or studied something other than what you studied?
Ponder all the major paths you have walked and write a story with
alternate circumstances; that is, have your character marry one person
in the first version, but someone else in the second version and show
how the shift changed the outcome. If not marriage, show your character
living in one type of environment when growing up in one version, but
change that environment for the second version, and write a story that
reflects the differences.
You get the drift, right? Choose any major choice, shift, or
circumstance and write a story using the same basic character but two
different circumstances and show how the alternate stories would play
out.
You may choose to keep both stories and make them part of one book or
short story, or you may pick one of the two stories to develop further.
