One: Kudos to Carole Madan, Michael Levy, Bill Jackson, Vicki
Kestranek, Sande Cropsey, Lou Paris, and Bobbie Christmas
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an
achievement]
Last spring I was given a monthly article through 400 Edition, a
publication that highlights people and events along the Highway 400
North corridor. The
monthly assignment led to three speaking engagements, exposure as a
master networker, and other benefits. As a member of the Fulton County
Citizens Commission on the Environment, I write about environmental
hopes I have for Georgia and the world as well as gardening and related
concepts. The exposure has led to interesting contacts for my television
show project, "Momma Nature's World." The healing of our culture and
world is a main focus of my TV show and new radio show, "Momma Nature's
Women's World." --Momma Nature Carole Madan
Professional Optimist Michael Levy, a member in Florida writes, "I did
not realize [The Royal College of Psychiatry and others] had published
me so many times." Take a look at
http://www.google.com/u/rcpsych?q=Michael+Levy&B1=Search
"I'm pleased to report that my novel, _Crackajack Love,_ has been
published by ThomasMax Publishing. _Crackajack Love_ is about choices.
Alex is a confused farm boy who dreams of becoming an actor when his
Army enlistment is over. What he doesn't plan on is falling in love
with two people. The story is told against backdrops of Seoul, New
York, and Hollywood in the early 1960s. The book is available at U. S.
bookstores and Internet sellers. For more information, see
www.crackajacklove.com. -Bill Jackson
Vicki Kestranek won First Place in fiction/essay in the Georgia Writers
February competition with her entry titled "Clearing the Air."
Sande Cropsey, a member in Griffin, Georgia, received notice that her
play has been named one of about 60 semifinalists in the Theatre Oxford
10-Minute Play Contest for 2006. The semifinalists' plays were selected
from 254 entries and are being further considered for the finalists'
round. From twenty or so finalists, five winners will be chosen to be
given a staged reading April 1, 2006, in Oxford, Mississippi, at St.
Peters Episcopal Church's Parrish Hall. At that time, the ranking of
the five winners will be announced.
Lou Paris, a member in Switzerland, writes: "Another of my poems,
'Steam,' has won runner-up to the winner in the winter issue of 'Poetry
Today.' There were 2,800 entries worldwide. So far three poems out of
three submitted have been winners in international contests since
2002."
Your very own editor takes pride in announcing that my creative
nonfiction entries won first and third places in the Georgia Writers
Association Annual Members' Contest. First Place, "Sunday Breakfast,"
describes my father's delight and idiosyncrasies while he cooks a
weekend morning meal, and the winning Third Place entry, "Adventure in
North Africa," follows my fear-filled yet intriguing trip to Morocco.
My poem, "Solitude as a Goal," also took first place in poetry in the
monthly Georgia Writers competition. Wow, I must have lived right this
month!
How did these people earn recognition? By submitting their work
somewhere, some time. I hope you are also submitting your work, and
when it gets recognition, please send your accomplishments for our
kudos section.

Two: From the editor's desk: Motivation
Dear Fellow Writers:
What motivates you to write? If I ask 20 people, I get 19 different
answers. I've been pondering the complex issue, because I want to write
my memoirs, but I also have to make a living. When could I take time
off from editing and/or writing other people's books and write my own?
In truth we don't need to take time off; we simply need to make time
for our own writing, too. We make time when we feel motivated.
I finally discovered a terrific motivation. I belong to quite a few
organizations for writers, but few give assignments or competitions.
Ours--The Writers Network--is one, and the Georgia Writers Association
is another. The GW competitions have a theme each month. Its Website at
www.georgiawriters.org lists the themes for the next year. You have to
be a member to enter the competition, but you don't have to be a member
to be inspired by the themes, which are intriguing enough to make any
writer think and respond. I give a big nod to Thom and Margo Fallis for
running the competition and devising great themes.
I can go down the list of themes and find one that speaks to me, one
that triggers a memory I've always wanted to write about. My writing
does not always fit the monthly contest when I finish or doesn't always
fit the theme for the month, but it doesn't matter. I have written, and
as you can see from the Kudos section, my memoirs not only are evolving
and accumulating, but they are also winning awards. Who knows? I could
be the next David Sedaris!
What motivates you to write? Money? Competition? Assignments?
Deadlines? Classes? Reading? Do whatever it takes to motivate yourself
and keep your fingers on the keyboard, so you, too, can reap the
rewards of saying, "I am a writer."
Enjoy this newsletter and be sure to send your kudos, questions,
comments, and leads to share with members of your network.

Three: Ask the Book Doctor about era transitions, writing humor, and
submitting to the wrong agent
Below are questions raised and discussed at some of The Writers Network
meetings. Here are the results for all members to read.
Q: I'm writing a book that spans a long period of time. What's the best
way to show the transition from one era to another?
A: Many people said the easy way out is not always the best way, simply
to put the date at the beginning of the new portion, as a subhead,
chapter title, under the chapter title. Participants said that method
works, but it's too pat, too easy, and it's distracting to some
readers. The group agreed that the best method is to set the era with
current events, current music, and other references.
One member made the point that the long skips of time may be an
indication that the novel spans too much time. If the information in
the beginning is vital to the plot, perhaps it can be recast into
dialogue or memories that come to light in a later era.
Q: Do you have any suggestions about how to write humorous personal
stories?
A: Attendees agreed that humor takes hard work and often does not work.
One member suggested recording the stories as you speak them, then
typing them up as spoken. That method avoids a stilted writing style
that would intrude on the story. We all agreed that someone else must
read the stories to ensure the humor is intact and that it works. Study
the masters at telling humorous personal stories, such as Dave Barry,
David Sedaris, and Erma Bombeck.
Q: I met an agent who had just given a talk. She said that if one agent
turns you down, don't send the same manuscript to another agent in the
same agency. I told her I had a manuscript that I thought was better
suited for someone else at her agency, rather than her, but she
insisted on seeing it. She rejected it later and said she didn't handle
that type of book. I knew that fact when I sent it to her. Can I now
send it to the right person in her agency, the one who handles my type
of book, even though I know she said not to do so?
A: This question created quite a discussion. Some folks said the
circumstances were unusual, and the author should go ahead and submit
the manuscript to the right agent without saying anything to the first
agent. Others disagreed.
In the end, we all agreed that the author should contact the agent,
explain the situation, and ask him or her what to do under the
circumstances. The point is this: Most agents usually pass a book on to
another agent within the same organization, if he or she thinks it has
merit but fits the other agent better, and the two agents share the
agency fee if the book sells. If the first agent does not think the
book is right for anyone in the agency and rejects it, submitting it
again won't change things, except that it might make an enemy of the
first agent.

Humorist to Head Guild
Roy Blount Jr. has been elected the new president of the Authors Guild,
taking over from Nick Taylor. Blount notes in the announcement: "Nick
told me to just fix the Google thing and the rest would be easy. Sounds
like a job for a humorist. Google wants to give away 'snippets' of
authors' work. Maybe we could work something out, there. But what
constitutes a snippet? We might begin by stipulating that no snippet
shall be as large as a full witticism. Then we might measure how many
snippets there are in, for instance, 'A Million Little Pieces.'"

Six: Writing Assignment: A New Leaf
On my morning walk with my dog, I enjoyed the new leaves pushing out of
tree branches that have been barren for months. I love the spring, a
time when nature bursts forth with color and newness.
I thought about the term "Turning Over a New Leaf" and pondered its
many implications. Basically it means a new start, a new beginning, a
shift in thinking, a new way of acting. Fiction writers must show their
characters changing, growing, shifting, or turning over a new leaf. For
this exercise, begin a story with a character wanting one thing, and
over the course of the story, show how that character shifts, changes,
turns over a new leaf, and wants something entirely different by the
end.
