Writer’s quote of the day:
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -- Dr. Seuss
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One: Kudos
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an achievement]
(Did you know kudos is singular? There’s no such word as kudo.)
My nonfiction story, "When Just Enough Isn't," received Honorable Mention in the Atlanta Writing Club Spring Contest. --Barbara Collins
Bill Kopp made me blush, but I’m proud of him. Here’s what he wrote: “Several months ago I followed up on one of the opportunities you mentioned in your (endlessly useful) e-newsletter. As a result I landed a gig writing for Skope Magazine online, a national music magazine out of Boston. After I contributed to a few issues, the editors contacted me and asked for me to author a monthly column in the print publication. After I submitted my first "Bootleg Bin" column (which will be in the July issue), they contacted me and offered me the cover story for the August issue. All this is in line with my plan to establish my "street cred" as I develop my book proposal on a related topic (of grand scale). None of it would have happened without you, so kudos to you!”
You’re the greatest, Bill! Bill also is the miracle worker behind my Web site, keeping it updated and running smoothly while I concentrate on other matters.
“My short story Crescendo will appear in the next issue of Mystic Horizon Press (http://www.mystichorizonpress.com/) due to come out June 30th. The story deals with a woman's fantasy about an orchestra conductor. Come read the impressive lineup of poetry, short stories, and visual art from beginning and well-known artists. Crescendo is my second publication with this magazine.” --Nanette Littlestone
Please send in your accomplishments for our kudos section.
Two: From the editor’s desk: Wow! Pat me on the back!
Dear Fellow Writers:
Wow! The Georgia Author of the Year Awards took place at the Robert Ferst Center at Georgia Tech in Atlanta Saturday, June 4, 2005. My book, Write In Style, was one of the nominees in Creative Nonfiction, and it faced stiff competition from books published by much larger publishing houses. I did not hold out much hope, so you can imagine my pleasure and surprise when Write In Style took the award for best in its division. The judge said glowing things about the book, most of which went in one ear and out the other, in my excitement to reach the stage and collect my certificate of honor. The one thing I remember is that she plans to use Write In Style as a textbook for her creative-writing students. Another great honor!
If you have not yet bought a copy, go to Amazon.com to buy it today (or better yet, go through my Web site, www.zebraeditor.com, pay Amazon.com prices, and I get a few more pennies per book).
Enjoy this newsletter and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments, and leads to share with members of your network.
--Bobbie Christmas
Three: Ask the Book Doctor: Dots, dashes, chick lit and terms of endearment
Q: Bobbie, would you please address dashes and ellipses and explain when to use each?
A: I hope The Chicago Manual of Style will forgive me for quoting it directly, but I bow to the authority:
Authors and editors are not always consistent in the way they use ellipses and dashes in interrupted speech, but an attempt should perhaps be made to establish a distinction. Ellipsis points seem to suggest faltering or fragmented speech accompanied by confusion, insecurity, distress or uncertainty, and they should be reserved for that purpose. The dash, on the other hand, suggests some decisiveness and should be reserved for interruptions, abrupt changes in thought, or impatient fractures of grammar without the confusion or indecisiveness suggested by ellipses.
“I . . . I . . . that is, we . . . yes, we have made an awful blunder!"
The binoculars . . . where the devil did I put them?
“The ship . . . oh my God! . . . It’s sinking!" cried Henrietta.
Felicia dropped, almost as though she had fallen into her chair, and said, “I don’t understand. We were beginning . . . I had thought . . .”
"But . . . but . . .,” said Tom.
Notice that in the last example, a comma is used after the closing series of dots to separate the speech from the words identifying the speaker.
A dash or a pair of hyphens can denote a sudden break in thought that causes an abrupt change in sentence structure.
"Will he--can he--obtain the necessary signatures?" Mills said pointedly.
The Platonic world of the static and the Hegelian world of Process--how great the contrast!
Consensus--that was the will-o'-the-wisp he doggedly pursued.
(Excerpted from The Chicago Manual of Style)
Q: I’m working on a “chick lit” novel. This is a relatively new genre, so do you have any advice on resources or anything else for writing in this genre?
A: My best advice is to read as many novels in that genre that you can, to get a feel for how the characters work (usually strong women) and how the plots unfold. Reading five or six books in that genre should give you a good feel for it, and then you can determine whether your story idea fits into that formula. If so, write the manuscript, polish it, have it edited by a professional if possible, and research agents who handle chick lit. Unfortunately it is such a new genre that WritersMarket.com does not list it in its search engine, so see if any agents are mentioned in the acknowledgments section of the chick lit books you read or that you find in a book store. Write down the names of the agents, research their guidelines for submission, and follow the guidelines to the letter. Never forget to include a SASE.
Q: When a character speaks in dialogue, are terms of endearment such as honey, love, buddy, etc., always capitalized?
A: Yes, if they replace the name. No, if they don’t. For example, let’s say a character says, “I’d like to take you to the prom, Honey.” Honey is capitalized because it is replacing the name of the character. He is calling her Honey instead of Sara or Sue or whatever her name is. The term of endearment would not be capitalized, however, if that character tells a friend, “Sue is my honey.” In that case, honey is not replacing Sue’s name.
Here are some other examples:
“Hey, Buddy, what are you doing looking in my car window?”
“Let’s buddy around with Jim today.”
“I love you, Sweetheart.”
“You’re a sweetheart for remembering my birthday.”
Do you have a question? Send it today to Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.
Sex between the pages
Ellis Vidler reports the following helpful information for members: “I went to the Coastal Carolina Writers Retreat at the end of May and met with Linda McFall, an editor for St. Martin’s Press. I asked her if [my novel] needed sex. She said yes, definitely, that it would be much more attractive to publishers and readers with it. I figured as much by the number of times I’ve seen “sexy” or “steamy” in Publishers Lunch and other reports recently. Also, the few authors I know who’ve jumped into romantica/erotica are making lots of money.”
Six: Writing Assignment: Motherly Love
You are thirteen years old, writing in your journal, as all aspiring writers do, when your mother throws open the door and finds you writing. She demands that you turn over your journal so she can see what you’ve been up to. Even if you have done nothing wrong, you feel she has no right to look into your private journal.
Visualize that scene and write it. What does the character see, feel, say, do? What is said between the character and his or her mother? What happens next?
If inspired, keep writing to create a full story. If not, you still have undertaken a task that allowed you to you get inside the head of a thirteen-year old and create a scene with dialogue, action, and reaction. Remember, the more you can fill the scene with tension and conflict, the stronger the scene will be.
