Writer’s quote of the day:
“It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” –Albert Einstein

One: Kudos
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an achievement]

Nanette Littlestone’s short story “Le Chocolat” is out at http://www.mystichorizonpress.com/. She says, “This is the first issue of Mystic Horizon Press--Water 2004--and it contains a wonderful collection of poetry, art and short stories. I encourage everyone to take a look.”
Bill Kopp, who is also my Webmaster, wrote, “In a recent issue of your e-zine, there was a mention of writing opportunities for Skope Magazine, an online and printed music publication based in Boston. As a writer and somewhat of an authority on rock music, I contacted them. Not only did I land the gig as one of a stable of contributing reporter/reviewers, but I also worked out a deal by which they are publishing a monthly column of mine called ‘Bootleg Bin.’ (http://www.skopemagazine.com/html/features06.html) It features capsule reviews of unreleased "collector" recording (studio outtakes, live performances, etc.). This all dovetails nicely with my in-progress book proposal. Being able to list the Skope Magazine column, along with my career-spanning artist reviews of Todd Rundgren and Pink Floyd at www.TrouserPress.com, should help add credibility to my proposal.”

Two: From the editor’s desk: Submission is everything
Dear Fellow Writers:
A fellow writer who recently signed up for my newsletter wrote, “I've rewritten my first novel three times and wonder if I'll ever feel it's ready.” My initial thought is, “Join the club,” because I have no trouble writing and submitting nonfiction, but I have rewritten my novel at least five times and only recently had the nerve to enter one chapter in a competition.
Writers, like all artists, must develop a sense of when it’s time to finish, submit their work, and face the music. For my novel, I thought five rewrites were necessary, because I had received valuable feedback from members of my critique circle and I learned a great deal with each rewrite. Some of my rewriting may have come from a fear of rejection, though. At that point, it is time to stop rewriting and start submitting.
You may actually learn something from comments you receive from agents and publishers. One comment I recall a fellow writer received from an agent was something like this: “I loved your book, but satire is too difficult to sell.” As a result, she referred to her book as humor instead of satire and a publisher bought it.
As we roll toward 2005, most of us will vow to write more. Let us vow to submit our work more, as well. You can write all day every day, but until you submit your work to agents and publishers, you’ll never get published. Learn when to stop rewriting and to start sending out your work. Let that be your project in 2005.
Enjoy this newsletter and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments, and leads to share with members of your network.

Three: Questions and Answers
Q: In one chapter of my book, I have the protagonist visiting the veterinarian’s office. There is narrative about the various animals in the room. The problem concerns the use of the breeds. For instance, my spell check program notes that Dalmatian is supposed to be capitalized, but golden retriever is not. It looks odd to have some of the names capitalized and some not. For the sake of consistency, should I capitalize all the breeds--whether it's proper or not?
A: Book manuscripts should follow Chicago Style, which outlines when to capitalize and when not. Chicago style dictates that breeds named after people or locations are capitalized, as the proper noun would be, as in Dalmatian, German shepherd, Chihuahua, and Jack Russell terrier. When the breed is not a designated proper noun, it is not capitalized, as in poodle, beagle, and bichon frise. Don’t worry about the apparent inconsistency; follow the style recommended by book publishers.
Q: I'm an unpublished poet whose collection exceeds 40 poems, so I'm ready to publish. The problem is I am not interested in self publishing, but I don't know how to go about finding a potential publishing company. Any suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
A: Alas, if you are an unpublished poet, the chances are slim of finding a traditional publisher willing to invest money and take a chance on selling a book of your work. If you hope to get a body of work published in a book, you must first have credentials that prove to an acquisitions editor that you have a following, people who will buy your book. Why else would a publisher invest in your work?
To prove yourself to a publisher, you must first be published in a wide variety of sources. To do that, submit your work to periodicals that accept poetry and to legitimate contests. Do not ever submit to competitions that make you buy a book; you should at least get paid in free copies. Writers must pay their dues before they are brought into the fold, so learn how to submit and where to submit a few poems at a time. After you have had success and can say that your work has been published in a few legitimate places, you are more likely to interest a publisher. As an example, a poet and associate of mine, Gene Fehler, sold his collection, Center Field Grasses, to McFarland & Company, but not until he had sold more than 50 poems to various periodicals and collections and had won top prizes in quite a few contests.
Q: Do you have any information on an agent named Michele Glance Rooney, of Simplynonfiction in Michigan? I did a Google search, and at least nothing bad came up. She claims to be a magazine editor/writer for 14 years.
A: I don’t have any personal information on Rooney or her company. I did notice she has a letter to the editor in the January Writer’s Digest.
The true test of an agency happens after you submit something. If any agency asks for money from you (other than minor charges for copying), run! Legitimate agencies make their money from publishers, not from clients.
Don't believe everything you read on the Internet, though. Sometimes disgruntled people post comments that never go away, whether they are true or not. You may have to trust your gut feelings, at times or, better, see if any legitimate complaints have ever been lodged with the company's local Better Business Bureau, because the bureau would investigate and report without bias.
Do you have a question? Send it today to Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.

Tom Wolfe wins most dreaded literary accolade
LONDON (Reuters) - American author and journalist Tom Wolfe won one of the world's most dreaded literary accolades--the British prize for bad sex in fiction. The prize is awarded each year "to draw attention to the crude, tasteless, often perfunctory use of redundant passages of sexual description in the modern novel." Wolfe won it for a couple of purple passages from his latest novel "I am Charlotte Simmons," a tale of campus life at an exclusive U.S. university.
One of his winning sentences begins, "Slither slither slither slither went the tongue, but the hand that was what she tried to concentrate on, the hand, since it has the entire terrain of her torso to explore and not just the otorhinolaryngological caverns -- oh God, it was not just at the border where the flesh of the breast joins the pectoral sheath of the chest -- no, the hand was cupping her entire right -- Now!"
Judges described Wolfe's prose as "ghastly and boring." For more, see: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&e=1&u=/nm/20041214/od_nm/odd_literature_sex_dc

*lissotrichous (li-SO-tri-kuhs) adjective
Having straight or smooth hair.
[From Greek lissós (smooth) + trich-, from thrix, (hair). Some cousins of this word are cymotrichous (having wavy hair), trichotillomania (the compulsion to pull out one's hair), and its end result atrichia (baldness).]
"Madonna's Blonde Ambition tour notwithstanding, women really aspire to be lissotrichous brunettes, since sleekness and shine - the season's chief criteria - show much better on dark hair."

So You Quit Smoking Cigarettes?
I am seeking true personal stories to be compiled into a book from people who have successfully stopped smoking cigarettes. Do you remember how you used to feel as a smoker? How did you stop? Your story may help those people feeling helpless to quit.
It will be useful if you discuss the effects cigarette smoking had on your physical and mental health, social and family relationships, psychology, work and life development, finance, embarrassing moments and other not-so-obvious effects. Briefly discuss how your life has changed since you stopped smoking cigarettes. I will compensate with mention in the “Credits” section if I use your story and an autographed copy of the first and subsequent editions.

Six: Writing Assignment:
Delve into your dreams
“I had the oddest dream last night…” How many times have you had an unusual dream that moved you and stayed with you? How many times did you write it down or discuss it and try to analyze it? Because you’re a writer, I hope you do it often. If not, resolve today to start a dream journal. Keep a notebook by your bed. No matter when you wake up, in the middle of the night or in the morning, jot down at least a few key words that will assist you in reconstructing the dream once you are fully awake. Write down feelings, colors, events, scenes, people, and anything else that comes to mind about the dream.
This assignment is twofold for those who have not yet begun a dream journal, but those who have a journal can begin with number two. Number one is to begin a journal immediately. Number two is to take time to read over a few recent dreams and then sit and ponder them. What images come to mind? Rewrite those images into scenes that begin a novel, play, short story or essay.
