One: Kudos
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an achievement]
Congratulations to the following members:
“My bid to CDC got awarded!! They selected my proposal through Georgia Perimeter to do a class on Presentation Skills for CDC employees! YAY!” –Vicki Flier, Highroad Presentations
^^^^^^^
At the meeting Friday, Walter Lawrence brought the latest issue of North Fulton magazine. He has two articles in it. Good job!
^^^^^^^
John Graham, a member who survived Hurricane Frances in Gainesville, reports that when his power finally went on a week later, he turned on his computer with joy. He says, “I had 22 items in my inbox. The first one I read came from an editor of Tableau, an artsy magazine published in Amsterdam. She said my article (an addendum on Simonetta) will be published in December or January, and she asked that I send illustrations. That raised my whoopee level a few more decibels.”
^^^^^^^
Adrian Drost received the Southeastern Writers Association third-place award for nonfiction and honorable mention in the Jarvis Humor category, as well as the Reverend Roscoe Plowman Southeastern Angel award for outstanding support during the 29th annual SWA Workshop.

Two: From the editor’s desk: Be Web-centric
Dear Fellow Writers:
Dan Poynter, the self-appointed Mr. Self-Publishing, accomplishes amazing things, despite his busy schedule. Hundreds of days out of each year, he’s on the road promoting his books and seminars. How does he do it? He advises: Be Web-centric. Create a Web site that works for you, so you don’t have to do all the work yourself.
Although my latest book, _Write In Style_, is not self-published, it still requires a great deal of time promoting it, while I must continue to handle my regular editing and writing work and market my company and produce this e-zine and attend vital meetings and—oh, yes, have a life. I wanted to take Dan Poynter’s advice, but I knew nothing about creating or maintaining a Web site. A dear friend created a great site for me, but she has a separate full-time business. I couldn’t ask her to constantly update my site, add speaking engagements as they were arranged, revamp information when necessary, add new articles as I wrote them, or add links when I found useful sites. What could I do to stay Web-centric? I hired one Webmaster after another, but each one disappointed me.
Fellow member Roy Lantz told me of his Webmaster, Bill Kopp, and my life improved dramatically. Bill is the Web angel I’d been seeking. He handles anything I need. Thanks to him my Web site works quicker and more efficiently and is easier to navigate. I no longer have to maintain a subscriber list for my e-zine, because now anyone can go to my Web site and sign up for themselves. Visitors to my site can read about my books and order them through my Web site. Anyone can read some of my columns and Q & A information. They can learn about my upcoming speaking engagements and seminars and see what where I’ve spoken in the past. I have added links to important sites of interest to writers, and I keep adding more links and information. Bill always responds to my requests within 24 hours, and he often makes changes within mere minutes.
I asked Bill, “Where have you been all my Web life?” He answered, “Tell your friends!” Friends, I am telling you, now. If you need a highly responsive Webmaster, contact Bill at bill@billkopp.com. Tell him Bobbie Christmas sent you, so he’ll know how thankful I am to have found him.
Enjoy this newsletter, and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments and leads, to share with members of your network.

Three: Questions and Answers
Q: A friend of mine would like to copyright a name for an event. I can't locate the government address to file such an application. Do you have that available?
A: One cannot copyright a name. Copyrights refer to a body of literary work, such as a short story or a novel. Perhaps your friend wants to trademark a name. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, any time you claim rights in a mark, you may use the "TM" (trademark) designation to alert the public to your claim, regardless of whether you have filed an application with the USPTO; however, you may use the federal registration symbol "®" only after the USPTO actually registers a mark, and not while an application is pending. If you’d like to cover yourself completely, you can go to the trouble and expense to trademark a name officially. For more information see http://www.uspto.gov/
Q: I have at least five short stories and two novellas started but have yet to finish them. I can get into a habit of writing for a couple of hours three to four nights each week for about a month before I let something else get in the way. I want to get serious about my writing, but I need a "push," not to mention the stimulus of being around other writers. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
A: My favorite stimulus is a critique circle. If I did not have my circle, I doubt I would produce anything, myself, other than what I must write for work. When I know we are meeting in a few days, I put my rear end where it belongs (in a chair in front of my computer) and get busy, so I’ll have some pages to bring to the circle. I have found the best solution is to create your own critique circle by selecting people who write in a similar genre to you. My circle includes fiction and nonfiction writers, but most of us are writing books, anyway, as opposed to short stories. Never combine poetry writers with prose writers, unless you want to see blank stares from the prose writers when the poetry is read and vice versa. To find a circle already formed, go to writers meetings and ask around. To create your own circle, go to writers meetings and ask around. Do you see a pattern emerging? Go to writers meetings and network with other writers. When you do, you are likely to meet others who will help you get whatever you need to move your skills forward.
Q: Can any members recommend good printers in the north Atlanta area that are small-business-friendly? I would greatly appreciate any referrals. --Leah Perry
lperryers@earthlink.net
A: I’ll put this question directly to readers, along with your e-mail address. I haven’t been fortunate enough to find a printer I would recommend. Readers, any suggestions?
Note: In our last newsletter, I had the following question: “In regular snail mail letter, if I'm pitching a manuscript that is not yet a book, is it still treated as one and put in italics?”
Member Cecil Murphey, who has sold more than 90 books to publishing houses, sent an answer filled with wisdom and truth. He said, “My advice: NEVER use italics unless you can't do anything else. I hold to this rule for one reason: Italics are harder to read.
“When I send out manuscripts--articles or books--I still underline words instead of using italics--that's to make it easier for editors to see.
“I want to make everything as editor-pleasing as I can. That means no italics, no fancy type styles, no 10- or 16-point fonts. If I jar the editor's attention by anything, it's just one more subconscious reason for the editor to reject me. Editors look for reasons to reject a manuscript. They receive so many that it makes sense, doesn't it?”

Member Leah Perry sends this note filled with Websites of interest to writers.
http://www.mediabistro.com/ -- this is an interesting site for all types of media folks. I've been on their email for some time and they host a series of networking parties throughout the year in major cities across the US (including 3-4 per year in Atlanta). They also host online writing forums and courses and the founder, Laurel Touby, recently launched a new site, Freelance Marketplace. You can access it at www.mediabistro.com/fm.
In working on article placement for another client, I came across these sites for those looking for more exposure:
http://www.ezinearticles.com/ -- a great place to have your work published online, but unfortunately, as of the first of this month, they have started charging writers a fee ($7) to have their material considered for posting. They will “bump up” your submission in the review cycle if contributors agree to add a link to the e-zine site on the [writer's] Website. We've had several pieces posted.
http://www.articlecity.com/ -- same concept as e-zine, but they don't charge the writers (at least not yet). 15-30-day review cycle. I have made some submissions, but am still in the 15-30 day waiting period, so I don't know how well they respond or how good the chances are of actually getting material posted here.
http://www.publicityhound.com/ -- this is a great marketing site specifically for writers/authors and other media professionals. The founder, Joan Stewart, is a well-known marketer/publicist for writers, and she has some great tips for getting your book, manuscript, etc., noticed. She puts out a monthly e-newsletter packed with tips and strategies.

Six: Writing Assignment: Frustration Encourages Creativity
Most letters to the editor and personal essays, such as “My Turn” in Newsweek Magazine are the result of the frustration of the writer. What makes you frustrated? When was the last time you said, “Someone ought to do something about that?” Write an essay or letter to an editor to vent that frustration. Be sure to give your personal experience with the situation and give a solution that is logical and possible. You might like your essay enough that you will send it to a newspaper. If you do and it gets published, let me know!
