Two: From the editor’s desk: Be the Writer!
Today I heard from yet another person who has a story to tell but does not think she is able to write it herself. I gave her information on ghostwriters and sent her on her merry way. I am in the business of helping writers, and writers write. The rest of the folks are mere dreamers.
Some days I think everyone wants to have a book published, but no one wants to write it. With that thought in mind I must give a great nod of approval to all our members who are actually writing. Good for you!
Whoever said writing was easy? Nothing done well is ever easy. I hope all of you who actually put ink on paper proudly announce to others, “I am a writer.” You have much to be proud about, even if you never sell anything. Be the writer! Read the questions and answers section today to learn more about claiming credit for your work.
Enjoy this newsletter, and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments and leads, to share with members of your network.

Three: Questions and Answers
Q: I’ve had several things published, but I’ve never been paid for them. Can I still claim to be published?
A: Absolutely. Most of us got our start by offering our services free to nonprofit organizations, to build a portfolio. Clips always count, even if your name does not appear on them. I’ve had many things published with no byline or with someone else’s byline. I wrote them, though, so they are in my portfolio. Getting published anywhere counts, whether or not money changes hands. Many writers write for reasons other than money, anyway. Take credit for all your successes, and don’t forget to report them for our Kudos section.
Q: My computer gives me the word count if I’ve already written something, but if a publisher says it wants 50,000 words from me, how can I figure the number of pages I should write?
A: In standard manuscript format, which your pages will average about 25 lines, about 75 characters a line. With that guideline, you can figure the following lengths:
50,000 words = 220 pages
60,000 words = 250 pages
70,000 words = 275 pages
75,000 words = 300 pages
80,000 words = 325 pages
85,000 words = 340 pages
You can do the math beyond that. Most publishers prefer novels to be between 50,000 and 100,000 words, although exceptions are made.
No, this formula does not equate to the number of pages in the published book. That figure depends on the design, illustrations (if any), typestyle, type size and book size. Many children’s books are 28 pages long in the printed form, but only a couple thousand words long.
Q: How can I determine the genre of my manuscript?
A: Here’s a breakdown of genres that may help. The list gets confusing, because genre fiction is also one of the genres. Huh? Read on.
Literary: In Literary Fiction the story is usually character driven and the language is artistic and perhaps even elevated. Some people have joked and said the difference between Literary Fiction and Mainstream Fiction is that Mainstream sells, a comment that leads us to Mainstream.
Mainstream: Mainstream Fiction has broad reader interest and is not genre specific, unlike the breakdown in the next category.
Genre Fiction: Genre Fiction is a bit formulaic and appeals to a specific audience. Genre Fiction includes such genres as Fantasy, Historical, Horror, Humor, Romance, Sci-Fi and Western.
Although considered a type of Genre Fiction, the following genre is usually in a category of its own.
Mystery/Suspense/Thriller stories include Crime, Courtroom Drama, Detective, Police Procedural, Legal Thrillers and other Thrillers.
Chances are if you cannot classify your genre, you can get away with calling it Mainstream, unless it’s too far out, in which case you might call it experimental writing, or as some say, typing. If so, save it in a drawer somewhere and start a book that fits in a category that will fit into a bookstore, if you hope to sell your fiction.
Q: In the past I've submitted poetry to magazines, and when I didn’t hear anything, I queried the magazines, asked if they had received my submissions, then had my material hurriedly returned to me as if my query had pissed them off. I wrote a new poem this morning that I'm thinking about sending it to a periodical with a note asking about my prior submission and a postcard for them to use to notify me with information. Care to tell me what you think?
A: Boy, do I. Having been on the receiving end of many submissions when I was the news editor for a newspaper and later the senior editor of a trade magazine, I can tell you what happens to submissions. They pile up. It’s the nature of the beast.
We editors have good intentions of meeting deadlines and returning unwanted submissions and replying to the ones we like, but we have more pressing deadlines to meet, first. The submissions pile up, often unread, until they overflow and become daunting.
If someone calls to ask about a submission, it could be anywhere in the stacks of unread submissions. If we can find the submission, we’re more likely to return it, because we don’t have time to deal with demanding writers. It’s easier to work with patient ones. My suggestion is to let the editor have a reasonable length of time, from three to six months, and if you hear nothing, submit your poetry, article or story elsewhere and forget about it.
Be easy to work with, and your next submission might be accepted. Be difficult, nosy or demanding and you’ll rarely get your work accepted.
Q: Yesterday a ghostwriter, called me and told me it would cost me about $11,000 for a book proposal, two chapters, and outline plus a query letter, with no marketing assistance. Is this a fair price?
A: It depends. If the person has no track record, the price is high. If the person has experience and has sold books based on his or her proposals, it is a reasonable price. He or she will have to spend about two months working on the proposal and chapters, so you must expect to pay a two-month salary. Good ghostwriters aren't cheap. Bad ones are. You decide if your story is worth approaching professionally, and if so, be willing to pay a reasonable fee for a writer with a good track record.
A question for readers: What motivates you and inspires you to write? Do you perform any rituals or make adjustments that help motivate you, when motivation doesn’t come naturally? Let me know. Your answer may appear in this newsletter or in my next book! Send answers to me at Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.

From Member Craig Garber:
How To Sell Hundreds of Copies of Your Book
The best way to promote your book is to sell it in places where your readers are hanging around.
I know this sounds ridiculously simple, so let me give you an example: Let's say you wrote a book on traveling to Australia. Most people would be sitting there, just dying to get their book published and into a bookstore, right? You know what? They're missing the boat!
Here's why: Do you think you're going to come across loads of people who want to know about traveling to Australia, walking down the aisles of your local bookstore?
No!
Figure out where the people who want to know about traveling to Australia are hanging out. What's the most likely place you'll find them? For starters, I'd say you'll find them reading magazines and newsletters, both online and offline, about
travel and about Australia. Make sense?
In fact, if you dig really hard, I'm willing to bet there are publications specifically dedicated to raveling around Australia. Run a small display ad in these publications with a good headline and good sales copy, and you sell your book right from your ad.
If you're really clever, you can even get free advertising in these publications by using clever press releases and reviews.
If you really want to sell loads of copies of your book, do these next two things, and you're almost guaranteed a smashing success:
1. First, you offer a money-back guarantee, for at least 90 days minimum.
2. Second, when you're marketing your book online, give your prospects the option of signing up for a series of free tips about traveling to Australia.
Doing both of those things converts loads of your prospects into buyers.
Good luck and happy selling. -- Craig Garber

127 Bishop Rd. NW
Cartersville, GA 30121-7324
Editor: Angela Giles Klocke

Complete guidelines: www.oneyoungparent.com/empowered/guidelines.shtml
Premiering January 2005, it will be published six times a year. Published by One Young Parent. Seeks articles that are informative and empowering for readers. The usual parenting-related topics are open and welcome, but ideas that present information in a new and upbeat way will have a better chance. Articles should be on both pregnancy and parenting. Readers are primarily very young and are either pregnant or parenting. The children of our readers are typically 10 years and younger, so articles should focus more in this age range. Rare exception will be given to topics for former young parents who are now parenting pre-teens/teens.
Especially interested in articles that assist young parents in returning to school or furthering their education. Topics that explain the process of applying for grants, for instance, are helpful and welcome, but an article that points to specific grants and specific parent-friendly schools are even better.
Articles that cover landing jobs, juggling work with children, and living well are especially encouraged.
QUERIES ONLY. Does not wish to see complete articles. Query first. If your query is accepted, you will be notified within one month of its receipt. Articles will typically run 1,000 words. Sidebars may be included, but there is no extra pay. Submit final article with brief author bio.
