Quote of the Day: Enthusiasm is the inspiration of everything great.
Without it no man is to be feared, and with it none
despised. --Bovee (1820-1904, American Author and Editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One: Kudos
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an achievement (takes a singular verb) • The president deservedly got the kudos for the success of the negotiations.]
I had three stories published in the newly released collection, Horse Miracles, published by Adams Media. I don't like the way they handled "writer credits," and I never did get my promised "complimentary copy," but I'm still happy to have had three stories accepted. The publisher never notified me; I just spotted the book on the shelf one day at Border's, flipped through, and three were my submissions! –Kimberly Freeman
My poem "Moving South" has been selected for publication in this year's "O, Georgia" book. I see from the last 'Kudos' section that I will be in really good company! I would like to thank you as well, I use your Purge Your Prose of Problems Desk Reference all the time, so I feel like my success is your success as well. Thanks! --Carol Horton
^^^^^^^^
I, too, have an entry in the sixth edition of _O, Georgia!_ My nonfiction piece, "Of Wheelchairs and Wings," about local, award-winning special-ed teacher Michelle Donovan will appear in this anthology, and Michelle will sign books with me at the reception in October. --George Weinstein
^^^^^^^
Member Bobbi Kornblit had poem accepted in O, Georgia! as well.
^^^^^^^
I was just published, again, in Brian Mackenzie's Successful Coaching emag out of the UK. Circulation is around 80,000 or so I have been told. But this has not been verified by me. In this case ignorance is bliss. And my Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation pattern development article was in the April PowerLiftingUSA magazine.
It has been a good month. --Danny M. O'Dell, MA. CSCS, *D
~~~~~~~
My book is scheduled to be released in July. Munchausen by Proxy: Identification, Intervention, and Case Managment by Louisa J. Lasher (Monticello, Georgia) and Mary S. Sheridan (Hawaii). Publisher: The Hayworth Press. MBP is a dangerous kind of maltreatment in which caregivers deliberately exaggerate and/or fabricate and/or induce "problems" in others. "Problems" may be physical and/or psychological-behavioral-mental health. Children or adults may be victims.
By the way, we got fantastic review quotes for the back cover.--Louisa J. Lasher
~~~~~~~
A piece I wrote about my son, titled "Pigs in Combat Gear," has been accepted in the Mother and Sons issue of the Cup of Comfort book series, to be released next spring. Also, a story I wrote about my daughter's cochlear implant, "Ocean Sounds," has been published in the May issue of Georgia Magazine under the section, "My Georgia." --Ellen Ward

I made the cut for the Perfect Pitch competition at the Atlanta Film Festival. I’ll be one of ten competing. I’ll get to pitch a film idea to a panel and an audience. The winner gets a free trip to L.A. and introductions to more producers. –Loretta Paraguassu
~~~~~~~~~
Here’s a note Kimberly Boim, publisher of M.D. News, Atlanta, received recently about an award she was given: “The GPA Executive Committee was so pleased with your article and your publication, that they have voted to give you our 2004 Media Award for presenting Psychology in Print. Our awards are announced at our Annual Meeting, which will be held at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort, Hilton Head, South Carolina on Saturday, May 15 at our Annual Business Meeting.” Wow!
~~~~~~~~~~
This just came in from member Cliff Chandler, which proves we saved the best for last: “Glenda Ivey, owner of JADA Press, is proud to announce the winners of the 2004 Mystery Book of the Year Awards Contest. MYSTERY BOOK OF THE YEAR WINNER: DEVASTATED by Cliff Chandler

Two: From the editor’s desk: My Book Is Released!
Write In Style
By Bobbie Christmas
Union Square Publishing (available through Amazon.com now: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1580421342/002-8416599-0607216?v=glance&s=books ) (Soon available in bookstores and directly from the publisher at http://www.cardozapub.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/new/publishing.htm?L+scstore+vdyz5931ffe0b4e0+1086195269
What does the above mean? My first box of books arrived Thursday. I gasped, I jumped with joy, I cried, and I laughed. The process of taking my book from idea to proposal to sale to print has taken four and a half treacherous years, and now the real work begins. I didn’t have to pay to publish or distribute the book, but who has to market and promote it? Me. Who has to give the publisher ideas to follow up on? Me. Who has to track down Amazon.com to discover it has the wrong cover and slightly wrong subtitle? Me. Who has to tell the publisher Barnesandnoble.com hasn’t yet listed the book? Me. Who has to be on top of everything? Me. Who will be schlepping books to every presentation she gives in the future? You guessed it.
Anyone who thinks that using an agent is the end of a writer’s responsibility is sadly mistaken. Agents and publishers expect you to be the primary promoter of your own book, so get over being shy. Get over being humble. Get over being a recluse, if you want to ensure your book sells and gets into the hands of the public.
Yes, congratulations to me on the release of my book, Write In Style, Using Your Word Processor and Other Techniques to Improve Your Writing. Now the real work begins. Won’t you buy a copy today?
By the way, here’s what one of the earliest people to buy my book had to say about it: "I'm on page 44, and I'm absolutely in awe. This book is priceless. I've spent hundreds of dollars on books, searching to find out how to improve my techniques, but in 44 pages of your book, it tops everything I've come in contact with. It's a wealth of information and will change my life. Thank you for writing this book. It's priceless." Thank you, new member Renee Irvin; you made my year!
Enjoy this newsletter, and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments and leads, to share with members of your network.

Three: Questions and Answers: When can you claim author credit?
Q: In a book that published my story, the stories are assembled as individual chapters, but there is no table of contents or "Contributor's notes," so I'm wondering, can I still claim this as a credit in author bios?
A: Absolutely. Once you write something, you do not have to get a byline or get paid, to claim credit for having written it. If it gets published, you are a published writer, again, without regard for byline or payment.
Do you have a question? Send it today to Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.

Four: Subjects of interest to writers
From A Word A Day (wsmith@wordsmith.org)
causerie (ko-zuh-REE) noun
1. Chat.
2. A piece of informal writing.
[From French, from causer (to chat), from Latin causari (to plead, discuss),
from causa (case, cause). Other words derived from the same root are accuse,
rush, and excuse.]
Visual Thesaurus: http://visualthesaurus.com/?word=causerie
"One usually observes that during causeries between friends, relatives,
colleagues and even his mother (mostly not Westerly or Englishly
educated), words of English oftentimes creep into one's utterances so
much so that it is now an accepted norm in our tradition that it has
gained an appellate of ingausa (meaning an admixture of English and
Hausa) in our expressions."

Readers needed for agency
http://www.aboutwords.org/agency/index.html
Established literary agency in Alpharetta, Georgia (About Words Agency) is looking for at least two first readers of queries, as interns.
No pay is available for these positions at this time; however, readers will begin to be paid at a later date, as sub-contractors of the agency, at some point after the free training has been completed.
No money will be paid to the agency by the readers/interns. This is neither a get-rich quick scheme nor a scam.
Benefits: As a subcontractor, readers will be required to provide their own transportation, as well as their own health insurance and other benefits.
Requirements: Own email account with daily access, transportation to and from the Alpharetta area, must enjoy reading books, interested in becoming a better editor and/or writer or simply interested in being a reader for a literary agency, 10 hours a week minimum available for
reading and evaluating queries, able to attend weekly hour-long meetings.
About Words Agency is the only literary agency that responds to all queries with a one-page personalized evaluation (free and with no obligations). The agency receives all types of queries--fiction and nonfiction--and works with a wide range of books. See the website for details.
http://www.aboutwords.org/agency/index.html
The current readers are writing the evaluations, but the volume of queries has gone up beyond what they can easily handle, and it is expected to rise eventually to the previous related agency's level of 500 queries per week, and more. The current first reader is a highly experienced editor, and the
other readers are literary agents-in-training, which the reader/intern may also have the opportunity to learn, as well, once they are trained as a reader. Opportunities to work as an independent editor at a different company may also become available, should that direction be one the reader is interested in pursuing.
Writing the query evaluations for the agency has been proven to quickly improve both editing and writing abilities, should the reader wish to have help with either one, as a main goal or a nice side benefit.
Please respond to: agent @ aboutwords.org with the word "reader" in the subject line.
We are looking forward to hearing from you!
-Susan L. Graham
