Quote of the Day: The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame.
--Oscar Wilde
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One: Kudos
[Kudos: noun: praise or honor: praise, credit, or glory for an achievement (takes a singular verb) • The president deservedly got the kudos for the success of the negotiations.]
I have a piece in this week's issue the Cherokee Ledger-News. I wrote it with Reader's Digest in mind, but, alas, the Digest didn't even return it in the stamped envelope I sent. Such is life. –Dick Dowis
^^^^^^^^
I got an article published in the monthly publication of the American Society of Training and Development. The article was about a training revitalization I implemented at my company, BellSouth. Very technical and boring, but a start!!! -- Jill Sutton
^^^^^^^
I just got a letter today from Humpus Bumpus that one of my short stories, "Exercising Your Demons," is a winning entry in the "O, Georgia! A Collection of Georgia's Newest and Most Promising Authors" contest and will be publishing in the sixth edition of O, Georgia! in October. --Bobby L. Hickman
^^^^^^^
My short story, A Month of Sundays, was selected as a winning entry in this year's edition of the O, Georgia! A Collection of Georgia's Newest & Most Promising Writers. --Kathleen Walker
~~~~~~~
Brian Tracy wrote an endorsement of my upcoming book, Never Beat the Boss at Horseshoes...102 Ways to Pitch Ringer After Ringer in the Game of Life! Here’s what Brian had to say: "This is a fast-moving, enjoyable, entertaining book, full of great ideas and insights you can use immediately to improve your life." –Roy Lantz
~~~~~~~
My short story, "Forgiveness of Icarus," will be included in the sixth annual edition of O, Georgia! A Collection of Georgia's Newest & Most Promising Writers. –Walter Lawrence
Congratulations to all these members. I’m especially pleased to see our group will be so well represented in O! Georgia, a highly respected annual anthology. What made these folks successful? They followed through. They submitted their work, and now they are reaping the rewards. I hope you are submitting your work, too.
Do you have good news? Please send it to me at Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.
Two: From the editor’s desk:
Strike while the iron is hot. Footprints in the sands of time are not made by sitting down. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. All these proverbs apply to writers, too. Today I received an e-mail from a Writers Network member looking for a link to a site that wanted parenting-story submissions. Alas, the link came through a service for writers, and the actual Web site was not listed. The service does not keep the notices posted forever, so the information was no longer available. What’s the message? If you see something that fits your writing, follow the link right away and gather the vital details. Send for or find writer’s guidelines. Contact the people and express an interest. Send in your articles. Act! The early bird catches the worm. Seize the day. Get the picture?
The Georgia Writers Festival of Workshops is coming up this Saturday. It is one day jam-packed with valuable seminars worth much more than the cover price. See more information in this newsletter.
When is rejection not rejection? I received an e-mail notice that my submission to Adams Media’s Cup of Comfort for Mothers and Sons had made it to the finals, and the final selections would be announced soon. A few weeks later, a dreaded notice came in the mail. My story did not make the cut. Disappointed, I filed the letter and tried to forget about it. A couple of days ago, I received notice by e-mail that my submission is one of 55 selected for possible inclusion, and the final book may or may not have all 55, depending on space allotment. This time the editor sent an edited version of the story for my approval. I’m stunned but happy. My story still stands a chance of inclusion. I’ll never again take rejection seriously.
Enjoy this newsletter, and be sure to send your kudos, questions, comments and leads, to share with members of your network.
Three: Questions and Answers:
Q: If I have copyrighted a book and want to add to the chapters, how much can I add without having to get a new copyright? I plan to add questionnaires to each section. It was actually a manual. I may also change it to chapter-style headings. I haven't decided. –Micheline
A: Alas, this is the very reason why traditional publishers do not get a copyright on their books until right before going to press with the final product. The answer, though, is quite simple. A formal copyright is no longer essential. The laws have changed, and now the moment you finish a creative property, it belongs to you legally, and you do not have to register it the way we used to do. You can now choose whether to get a new copyright or not, but if you simply put a notice, such as contents copyrighted 2004 by (your name), no one can steal your property without breaking the law. I am not an attorney, though, so for complete details, check with an attorney familiar with copyright law.
Do you have a question? Send it today to Bobbie@zebraeditor.com.
Most of us have seen these rules on English, but they bear repeating:
1. Verbs has to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid clichés like the plague. (They're old hat).
6. Always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary.
9. Also, too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies
10. No sentence fragments. No comma splices, run-ons are bad too.
11. Contractions aren't helpful and shouldn't be used.
12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's
highly superfluous.
14. One should never generalize.
15. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
16. Don't use no double negatives.
17. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
18. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
20. The passive voice is to be ignored.
21. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words
however should be enclosed in commas.
22. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice.
23. Kill all exclamation points!!!!
24. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.
25. Understatement is probably not the best way to propose earth
shattering ideas.
26. Use the apostrophe in it's proper place and omit it when its not
needed.
27. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you
know."
28. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: resist
hyperbole; not one writer in a billion can use it correctly.
29. Puns are for children, not groan readers.
30. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
31. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
32. Who needs rhetorical questions?
33. Exaggeration is a million times worse than understatement.
34. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
How to Write a News Release that Hooks Reporters
by Rusty Cawley
The most important part of any news release is the headline. The second most important is the first paragraph. Everything else is either background or fluff. That’s why, when you compose a release, you should spend at least half your time on the headline and the lead. If you fail to hook the reporter with the headline and the lead, you have no chance at news coverage. Period.
Readers needed for agency
http://www.aboutwords.org/agency/index.html
Established literary agency in Alpharetta, Georgia (About Words Agency) is looking for at least two first readers of queries, as interns.
No pay is available for these positions at this time; however, readers will begin to be paid at a later date, as sub-contractors of the agency, at some point after the free training has been completed.
No money will be paid to the agency by the readers/interns. This is neither a get-rich quick scheme nor a scam.
Benefits: As a subcontractor, readers will be required to provide their own transportation, as well as their own health insurance and other benefits.
Requirements: Own email account with daily access, transportation to and from the Alpharetta area, must enjoy reading books, interested in becoming a better editor and/or writer or simply interested in being a reader for a literary agency, 10 hours a week minimum available for
reading and evaluating queries, able to attend weekly hour-long meetings.
About Words Agency is the only literary agency that responds to all queries with a one-page personalized evaluation (free and with no obligations). The agency receives all types of queries--fiction and nonfiction--and works with a wide range of books. See the website for details.
http://www.aboutwords.org/agency/index.html
The current readers are writing the evaluations, but the volume of queries has gone up beyond what they can easily handle, and it is expected to rise eventually to the previous related agency's level of 500 queries per week, and more. The current first reader is a highly experienced editor, and the
other readers are literary agents-in-training, which the reader/intern may also have the opportunity to learn, as well, once they are trained as a reader. Opportunities to work as an independent editor at a different company may also become available, should that direction be one the reader is interested in pursuing.
Writing the query evaluations for the agency has been proven to quickly improve both editing and writing abilities, should the reader wish to have help with either one, as a main goal or a nice side benefit.
Please respond to: agent @ aboutwords.org with the word "reader" in the subject line.
We are looking forward to hearing from you!
-Susan L. Graham
