KIDS AND MONEY
A recent survey by USAA, a financial services company, found that 79%
of all high school grads heading off to college have never had a budget
conversation with their parents. Many parents make it a point never to
discuss money in front of the kids. This is a big mistake that we
can’t afford to make. By helping your child learn that the mortgage,
food, and repairs come before “wants’, you’re setting your child up for
future financial success.
HOUSEHOLD TIPS
To help your houseplants retain moisture, bury used tea bags in the
soil.
To sharpen the blades of your garbage disposal, toss eggshells down the
drain, then follow-up with vinegar, to deodorize the disposal.
STUDENT LOANS
Thought about going back to school? The “NEW” Congress has reversed
the rates of student loans, from 7% to close to 3.5%. As soon as the
ink is dry on this new “money-saving” deal, refinance the student loans
you already have at the 7%.
DEBIT CARD USE
As consumers increasingly use debit cards instead of checks to buy
everything from groceries to gas, banks are making it costlier to make
a mistake. The average fee for overdrawing your account — by check or
debit — reached a record high of $27.40 last year, up 11% from five
years before, according to Bankrate.com.
A few years ago, banks charged these fees mainly for bounced checks.
Banks simply rejected debit card purchases if consumers had too little
money in their account. But more banks are allowing customers to
overdraw with debit card purchases and at ATMs, then hitting them with
fees of up to $35, according to the Center for Responsible Lending.
So, don't forget to "do the math" before you use your debit card.
