These wintery months of being stuck inside may have given you an opportunity to reduce the physical clutter in your home. I have spoken to several people who have cleaned closets, files and pantries. These places continually gather clutter. Yet, Eleanor Brownn addresses Deeper Forms of Clutter that you may not have classified as such. Here are three aspcts of clutter to consider:
One is old ideas: Sometimes during a coaching session, a client will express a desire to play the piano, or take painting or academic classes. Then, suddenly, that person will say something like, "Oh, I can’t do that. I’m not good enough." Not being good enough is an old idea and it does not support that person's better self. Clearing the clutter of this old idea is crucial to getting to the place he or she really wants to be.
The second is toxic relationships: An unhealthy relationship can be a very challenging piece of clutter to acknowledge and clear from your life. Negativity is unhealthy for the spirit, the body, and the mind. Stop. Take time. Analyze your relationships. Be true to yourself and find a way to eliminate any toxic relationships. The third is bad habits: These habits clutter your everyday life and diminish your productivity. Procrastination fuels the avoidance of correcting bad habits, such as overspending or nail biting. It takes three months of positive input, conscious action and discipline to erase a bad habit and replace it with a good one. Change is possible. Reframe your thoughts. Celebrate your success.
Clearing these three aspects of clutter take time, thought, action and determination.
