WHAT THIS PARENT DID RIGHT WITH HIS TEEN
I was counselling a grade 12 girl a few years ago.
Sandy (not her real name) had already lived through
a difficult family upbringing. Her mother deserted
the family when she was young and she was left to
be raised by a father who struggled with drugs and
poverty.
Not a good environment to raise a child in. When
Sandy became a teen she started using drugs and
alcohol and skipping school.
However, in grade 10 Sandy started to turn herself
around after joining an alternate school. With the
support of the staff and structure of this program her
life started to change. She graduated from high school
and starting working full-time in the restaurant business.
Later she plans to go back to school and attend college.
The Surprising Element That Helped Sandy Turn
Her Life Around
One day while working with Sandy as a therapist I
got curious and decided to ask her what she felt was
the crucial element in her being able to turn herself
around and get on track for graduating.
Her answer was surprising.
She explained that from a young age, she knew her
father believed in her. Even when she was going through
the roughest time in her life and things were not looking
good for her she felt her father’s love and unwavering
faith that she would have a positive future.
Sandy’s father gave her the one element that made all
the difference. In fact using one of the only really positive
things he could give her was in fact the game changer in
her life. She could see it and feel it in his eye that he
believed in her no matter what was happening at that time.
What Are You Doing to Help Ensure Your Teen Feels
You Believe in Her or Him?
I thought about Sandy’s answer to my question. I looked
at the many things Sandy’s father did not do that so many
other responsible parents do quite well. Many parents
provide a safe stable home, plenty of food, clean clothes,
structure, stability, money, and modeling the value of
being responsible, tax paying, and law abiding citizens.
Most parents would agree that these are all important
elements for raising the best equipped future adults from
any family. And yet, in spite of Sandy’s father’s limitations,
he still was able to instill some self worth in Sandy that
she was competent and capable.
Having faith in our children.
What a simple, yet powerful thing to practice in our
families. How are you using your body language and
voice in a way that gives your teen the message that he
or she is worthy and capable of great things? Are you
doing this even when he or she is resisting your efforts
to guide them on a positive path. It doesn’t take much
to remember to do this, even though it may be difficult
when they are acting out, talking back and seemingly
headed in the wrong direction.
But, if you remember to convey to your son or daughter
that you believe in them, they may thank you for it later.
It very well may be the game changer in their life that
they need the most from you.
